CONTEXT

STORM SEWER

The Hazleton Private Storm Sewer Phase 1 project supports a major commercial development in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, featuring five proposed buildings, parking areas, and supporting infrastructure. Located downstream of a primary drainage corridor and adjacent to railroad property, the site receives significant runoff from the surrounding drainage area.

A key challenge was an existing municipal storm sewer discharging directly onto the property. The new network therefore, had to accommodate both site-generated runoff and incoming municipal flows. This required a high-capacity system capable of routing stormwater around future buildings, across varying terrain, and into multiple stormwater management basins.

Installed in Fall 2025, Phase 1 includes approximately 2,025 linear feet of KUSTOMFLO pipe, ranging from 60 to 120 inches in diameter, with customized profiles engineered for varying cover depths, loading conditions, and groundwater conditions.

CHALLENGE

The project’s demanding drainage conditions required a system capable of handling high stormwater volumes, variable cover depths, heavy loads, and complex routing around future buildings. Originally designed with Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP) for the most heavily loaded sections, the contractor sought a more ecient alternative—one that could deliver faster installation, watertight performance, design flexibility, and greater cost efficiency across multiple pipe sizes.

SOLUTION

KUSTOMFLO replaced portions of the originally specified piping, offering lightweight installation, adaptability, and proven high-load performance. Engineers optimized pipe profiles for actual site conditions rather than designing solely for worst-case loads.

Customized lengths and profiles provided added field flexibility, including on-site cutting to fit precast structures. For the contractor’s first KUSTOMFLO installation, Soleno provided on-site support during initial connections and installation of the largest pipes. The double-gasket system simplified assembly, helping crews maintain installation speed and project schedules.

Pipe lengths and profiles were optimized for the project while allowing sections to be cut on site to fit precast concrete junction and access structures. For the contractor’s first KUSTOMFLO installation, Soleno representatives provided on-site guidance through the initial connections and installation of the largest-diameter pipes.

Multiple pipe diameters could be nested during shipment, maximizing transportation efficiency and generating additional cost savings for the project owner. Bottom line: KUSTOMFLO delivered optimized design, lower costs, faster installation, field adaptability, and hands-on technical support.
